Ian Logan spotted three White-bellied Korhaan flying near the radio tower on Telperion Farm at 10am on a day in mid-July. This Korhaan is an uncommon resident listed as Vulnerable and is endemic to the central and eastern regions of southern Africa. Its habitat is open grassland where termite mounds are plentiful, lightly wooded savanna and old agricultural fields . Its white belly is diagnostic and both sexes give a rhythmic, crowing 'tak-warat' croak repeatedly at dawn and dusk.
Dewald du Plessis has just started his PhD project on Ezemvelo/Telperion and he would like to know about any sightings of Korhaan species on the property to enable him to gather as much information as possible, so as to establish why the White-bellied Korhaan is threatened.
Elsabe Bosch of Telperion is delighted with the sightings that Dewald du Plessis has already made of the White-bellied Korhaan on the Ezemvelo/Telperion property. She reports that he has spotted four Korhaan on the property and seven just outside the property. She has alerted neighbouring farmers about the Korhaan research project and they are keen to participate.
