Namaqualand
On the wild and windswept West Coast – 60km south of Port Nolloth
– is Kleinzee. Aptly named the Diamond Coast, this beautiful stretch
of Namaqualand coastline is usually carpeted in wild flowers from August to early September and often shrouded
in mist in winter. It’s a moody place and yet calm reigns and stillness
pervades.
Diamonds aren’t the only treasures found in this area though,
this stretch of coastline has many unique offerings – and is unspoilt
and evocative. It is also home to about 115 bird species and many indigenous
plants, animals and insects. Typical bird species to be found would be Kori
and Ludwig’s Bustard and Southern Black Korhaan, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Jackal Buzzard, Karoo Scrub Robin,
Karoo Thrush, Lesser Double-collared and Malachite Sunbird and Orange River White-eye. A pleasantly
familiar site along this coastline is the near-threatened African Black Oystercatcher.
Birding routes here cover the coastline, an estuary and various nature
reserves.
